Pieces of the Whole

Title: Pieces of the Whole
Author/Artist: astrokath/chesneycat
Rating/Warnings: character death, dark, single instance of strong language
Character(s)/Book(s): original characters, unspecified time period
Summary/Notes: (word count: 5k approx) Your dragon is with you for life, and loves you for life, no matter how badly you screw up. How do you adjust to that? What if you can't? [written for palmedfire as part of the Yuletide 2013 rare fandom fic exchange]

This story follows a Weyrlingmaster as he guides a class of weyrlings from their dragons' hatching through to life in the fighting wings, with an emphasis on the riders and dragons who don't have an easy time of it. It's more of an extrapolation from canon than a story in Anne's style, with very little romanticism but plenty of depth.

If you're only going to read one story of mine, I want it to be this one.

Intriguing. And a nice change from all the 'perfect fit' Impressions and rider-dragon bonds you get in fanfic. Thanks for posting the story.

Makes me wonder about the casualty rates for the Dragonflight clutch in the South, where they sent exactly 36 candidates for exactly 36 eggs. Must have been a lot of mismatches in that clutch!

Thank you!

Yes, that is a bit of a plot hole! (It came up on the AMCF forum once, and I seem to recall the general consensus was that F'lar had to match the numbers F'nor told him he'd sent, but there was no reason he couldn't find another dozen or so youngsters to send in a second batch.)
