As a note, this was on FF.net on an account of mine that has since been hijacked; I'm also recovering an old hard drive that has the majority of the story on it. As such, I'm republishing it on a WordPress website/blog. The story can be found here; the first four chapters have been posted!

Title: The Regicide
Author/Artist: astrokath/chesneycat
Rating/Warnings: T/M, Character death; graphic depictions of violence; unbalanced power dynamics
Character(s)/Book(s): OCs, Fifth Pass
Summary/Notes: (word count: approx 300k total)

When Weyrwoman Maenida of the High Reaches comes to grief during Threadfall, the repercussions are disastrous for her entire Weyr. The Fighting Wings suffer crippling losses, and even the Lower Caverns are left in turmoil. With the Weyrwoman facing a long and slow recovery -- at best -- Weyrleader Sh'vek's options are limited...but that only makes it all the more essential for him to keep a tight hold on the reins of power.

Rahnis of Ista, brought in to assist junior weyrwoman Delene in the running of the Weyr, soon discovers that her new responsibilities will be even harder to manage than she imagined. With the Weyrwoman incapacitated and Delene proving more and more incompetent by the day, the future well-being of the Weyr -- and that of the Holds and Crafthalls it protects -- are placed in considerable jeopardy. Torn from her weyrmate, she struggles to find a workable solution that will make everything right...though it will, inevitably, exact a price.

But for some people, it's not all bad news. He may have been given leadership of the worst Wing ever to grace the skies of Pern, but for bronzerider F'ren the situation offers only opportunity. Turning his Wing around well enough to make a difference for the better is only the beginning: F'ren has no intention of resting on his laurels, no matter how hard his Weyrleader tries to stymie him.

Thread, however, cares little for human politics.

All Thread does is kill.

The Weyrwoman and Kiath are dead, Trath is lost between, and High Reaches Weyr is in shocked disarray. Sh'vek is determined that someone will pay the ultimate penalty for Maenida's death.

But changes are coming: Alaireth will rise within days. Unfortunately for Rahnis, the prospect of becoming Weyrwoman no longer holds the hopes it once did. Regardless of which bronze catches her queen, the consequences will almost certainly be dire: for her, for F'ren, and for the whole Weyr.

Rating/Warnings: T/M, Character death; graphic depictions of violence; unbalanced power dynamics
Character(s)/Book(s): OCs, Fifth Pass
Summary/Notes: (word count: currently approx 200k/300k total)

He may have been forced to announce his Weyrwoman's retirement, but Weyrleader Sh'vek has no intention of relinquishing his own power. Newly motivated to take a stand against him, Rahnis and F'ren have acted to ensure that the next queen to mate won't look kindly on Sh'vek's Ormaith...but much can change during the weeks of waiting still ahead of them.  Will better control of her abilities make Delene any more suited to the job of Weyrwoman? Can Egritte be trusted with anything? And how will the would-be killer in F'ren's Wing take the exposure of his crime?

And all the while the Threads still fall, and dragons are born with the sole purpose of destroying them.

Keeping Pern safe. That's always been the bottom line. That's what matters most of all. And there's nothing a rider won't do for their dragon, even if it comes at a cost to their own heart and soul...

Summary/Notes: (word count: currently approx 150k/300k total)

The consequences of one disastrous fall continue to haunt High Reaches Weyr. Weyrwoman Maenida remains in a precarious state of health, and Delene is taking her job as Acting Weyrwoman very seriously...if only to stop anyone else from stepping up and filling Maenida's shoes.  Rahnis has her hands full stopping the Lower Caverns from sliding into outright chaos, but Delene isn't content to leave her meddling there... Up in the skies of Pern, several close calls have forced F'ren to confront the fact that neither his Weyrleader nor his Wing's collective incompetence is his biggest problem right now. And for Weyrleader Sh'vek himself, the time to make some lasting decisions is drawing ever nearer...

Pieces of the Whole

Title: Pieces of the Whole
Author/Artist: astrokath/chesneycat
Rating/Warnings: character death, dark, single instance of strong language
Character(s)/Book(s): original characters, unspecified time period
Summary/Notes: (word count: 5k approx) Your dragon is with you for life, and loves you for life, no matter how badly you screw up. How do you adjust to that? What if you can't? [written for palmedfire as part of the Yuletide 2013 rare fandom fic exchange]

This story follows a Weyrlingmaster as he guides a class of weyrlings from their dragons' hatching through to life in the fighting wings, with an emphasis on the riders and dragons who don't have an easy time of it. It's more of an extrapolation from canon than a story in Anne's style, with very little romanticism but plenty of depth.

If you're only going to read one story of mine, I want it to be this one.

Chapters 1-12, which cover Part 1 of this story, are now up at both AO3 and FF.net

How can I sell this fic to you? Consistent, gritty worldbuilding, in a Pern where Thread is an ever-present threat to life and limb. Characters who are variously flawed, intelligent, stupid, brave, callous, strong and weak, characters who are forced to make choices, who sometimes make the wrong choices. Characters who grow. World-changing events, and events that touch only the hearts of those involved. And a promise in the very title: the worst possible crime the Pernese can imagine.

Part 2 will be going up weekly until the new year, and twice-weekly after that.

The first 5 chapters (out of a total of 47) are now available at AO3, and chapters 1-4 are mirrored at FF.net. Updates will be once or twice a week until the story finishes some time in April. Please feel free to ask about any specific triggers beyond those covered by the primary AO3 warnings: I'll be adding some appropriate tags as we go, but not in advance of posting the specific chapters they apply to.

Coming soon (October 2013): The Regicide

Title: The Regicide
Author/Artist: astrokath/chesneycat
Rating/Warnings: T/M, Character death; graphic depictions of violence; unbalanced power dynamics
Character(s)/Book(s): OCs, Fifth Pass
Summary/Notes:
In a world ravaged by Thread, the lives and fortunes of all depend upon the actions of a select few. Supported by Hold and Craft, the Dragonriders of Pern take the fight against their mindless enemy to the skies...and all too often pay the highest price of all. The bravest of the brave, a breed apart...or so the Harpers would have us believe.

But, Weyrbred or Searched, a dragonman is still only a man. Better, perhaps, in all the ways that dragons judge us...but no less flawed because of it.

When disaster strikes High Reaches Weyr, bronzerider F'ren is determined to rise to the challenge. Unranked, unloved, and thoroughly despised by his Weyrleader, opportunities to change the world for the better don't come along very often. How far will one man go in the cause of duty, or to save the lives of those he holds dear?

The Regicide is a 300k novel set during a six month period of the 5th Pass, following the fate of High Reaches Weyr in the aftermath of misfortune. It has a cast of original characters who collectively confront the conflicts between duty and desire.

Starting in mid/late October, chapters will be posted once or twice a week, more-or-less keeping pace with the internal timeline. The story is complete and has been fully betaed. The first chapter, posted on FF.net several years ago, has been temporarily removed and substantially revised, but the story will continue at the same location. It will also be posted on AO3 one chapter in advance of its appearance at FF.net, mostly because I want to encourage readers to read the story on a site that's more encouraging of discussion in comment threads.  I've written three other ~5k stories featuring the same protagonist. They're not essential reading, but would probably add to the enjoyment of the longer work. In chronological order they are: In the dark watches of the night [AO3/FF]; Paying the price [AO3/FF]; The long winter [AO3/FF]. Please feel free to refresh your memories between now and late October....
