Title: The Regicide
Rating/Warnings: T/M, Character death; graphic depictions of violence; unbalanced power dynamics
Character(s)/Book(s): OCs, Fifth Pass
In a world ravaged by Thread, the lives and fortunes of all depend upon the actions of a select few. Supported by Hold and Craft, the Dragonriders of Pern take the fight against their mindless enemy to the skies...and all too often pay the highest price of all. The bravest of the brave, a breed apart...or so the Harpers would have us believe.
But, Weyrbred or Searched, a dragonman is still only a man. Better, perhaps, in all the ways that dragons judge us...but no less flawed because of it.
When disaster strikes High Reaches Weyr, bronzerider F'ren is determined to rise to the challenge. Unranked, unloved, and thoroughly despised by his Weyrleader, opportunities to change the world for the better don't come along very often. How far will one man go in the cause of duty, or to save the lives of those he holds dear?
The Regicide is a 300k novel set during a six month period of the 5th Pass, following the fate of High Reaches Weyr in the aftermath of misfortune. It has a cast of original characters who collectively confront the conflicts between duty and desire.
Starting in mid/late October, chapters will be posted once or twice a week, more-or-less keeping pace with the internal timeline. The story is complete and has been fully betaed. The first chapter, posted on FF.net several years ago, has been temporarily removed and substantially revised, but the story will continue at the same location. It will also be posted on AO3 one chapter in advance of its appearance at FF.net, mostly because I want to encourage readers to read the story on a site that's more encouraging of discussion in comment threads. I've written three other ~5k stories featuring the same protagonist. They're not essential reading, but would probably add to the enjoyment of the longer work. In chronological order they are: In the dark watches of the night [AO3/FF]; Paying the price [AO3/FF]; The long winter [AO3/FF]. Please feel free to refresh your memories between now and late October....
